The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate
by Jacqueline Kelly
It's
1899, and Calpurnia loves nothing more than exploring the natural world
around her.
When she discovers that the yellow grasshoppers
in
her Texas backyard are so much bigger than the green ones, she enlists
the help of her naturalist grandfather and together they determined
that the yellow grasshoppers blend in to the yellow Texas grass more
than the green ones, so they survive long enough to get bigger.
As
Callie explores her environment, she develops a close relationship with
her grandfather, navigates the dangers of living with six brothers, and
comes face to face with the limitations and expectations of being a
girl at the turn of the century.
